Photography Is Painting By Light

A Tribute to Amrita Sher Gill on the World Photography Day

As a humble way of greeting to all those indulging and engaged in commemorating the World Photography Day , posting a view with some accompaniment of a book purchased @ JNU (old campus) in early 1980s which reinforced a long-held perception that ,' photography is painting by light '. The book by Derek Bowskill cost me Rs.30 only.Opening his preface with the Ronal Duncan(1964) quote " There is no light unless there is something for it to shine upon"  , the author says this was fully exploited in Antonioni's film Blow-Up , not only in it's making but also in it's subject matter : the analysis of an apparently insignificant event through the eyes of a professional photographer and his enlarger. " To see clearly is poetry , painting and photography , all in one ' , the author opines .

I just experimented to take a photo of this book with an acclaimed painting of Amrita Sher Gill. The photo was taken under the least possible light - some from a mobile power bank's attachment.

linking a facebook post that could not elicit much discussion on my experiment to illustrate what I had in my mind.  < https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10152999853085718&set=pb.645895717.-2207520000.1443763483.&type=3&theater>
